The white and Californian red wine varieties have a strong following with lovers of wine all over the world often to the detriment of other wines from the United States which are equally quite go
od. However since most American wine is produced in the state of California and Californian vintners have spared no expense in perfecting their art, the chances of other regions in the country surpassing the quality or volume of production of Californian wine any time soon, are very slim indeed.
The Cabernet Sauvignon is one version of Californian red wine that features prominently all over the world. This popular variety of red wine grape grown everywhere from family-owned vineyards to those owned by large corporate wine makers, is responsible for a huge part of the popularity Californian red wine enjoys. This wine is dark red in colour and has a pronounced flavor.
The Californian Merlot came to California in the middle of the 19th century , it is now popular as a varietal red wine in California and beyond. Unlike the Cabernet Sauvignon, it tends to come to maturity rather early, but this Californian red wine still has a full body as well as good red tone.
The Pinot Noir is also widely produced as a red wine in California, the grape is grown widely in vineyards all over the state. Unlike the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it tends to have a lighter red tone but tends to be full bodied too.
The Syrah is one of the newer wines to be produced in the state of California, it's popularity as a California red wine only started in the 90's but it has only gained further popularity since then. The grape is renowned for producing long lasting red wines with hues that differ from one bottle to the next. Connoisseurs will often describe the wine as dry with fruity and spicy aromatic characteristics.
Another California red wine popular internationally and domestically within the United States, is the California Red Zinfandel. Its popularity stems from the fact that it tends to do well with a wide variety of meals regardless of whether its fine cuisine or a regular pizza. The origins of the grape might be Croatian in nature, but it has been largely defined by the fact that it is now a famous Californian red wine variety. Most people tend to drink the Zinfandel young but a number of varieties tend to age well. It has a colour that is deep red and close to black, its flavour is basically fruity but it has spicy hints as well.
