French Red Wine

As popular as French red wine is, France often comes second to Italy when it comes to the volume of wine annually produced and offered for sale and consumption around the world. However, this detail  bears no influence on the renowned quality of French wine and the fact that most people who know little about wine usually associate anything concerning the topic with the French.  Furthermore, most wines in non-European countries around the world owe a substantial part of their heritage to various strains of French wine grapes and draw a large part of their naming from the French.

There are over 23 varieties of French red wine available, some of these varieties are well known internationally while others are not popular even within the country itself. Some of the internationally renowned French reds include: Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Cinsaut, Pinot Meunier, Mourvedre and the Malbec. Some of the grapes for these wines feature prominently in other countries wine selections. Wines such as the Chilean Malbec and the Australian Syrah often come to mind.French-Wine-Regions.jpg

In France , the making of French red wine is a very controlled process, certain wines are grown in particular regions and with specific wine making methods. Some of the finest red wines in France come from the Burgundy and Bordeaux regions of the country. Areas such as the Languedoc-Roussillon on the other hand are infamous for their cheap bulk wines.

Of all French red wine, the Merlot is the most widely produced especially in the Bordeaux region, it is a dry, bold tasting red wine often with fruity hints of berries. The French Merlot can be found in restaurants, shops and dining tables all over the world, a global complement to fine cuisine or a regular meal.

Another French red wine popular internationally is the Grenache, its grape is the second most grown grape after the Merlot in France, although it does not command the same global market share as its other counterparts  because its own grapes are not as widely grown elsewhere, it commands respect in international wine circles.

The French Syrah is made predominantly made in the French wine making region of the Rhone. It has a pronounced fruity taste with hints of berries and has a deep purple tone. Syrah varies in taste characteristics depending on the particular winery that makes it some with a slight hint of spiciness while in others it is more pronounced. People who prefer this French red wine usually do so with spicy meals.

Bordeaux produces the famous Carbernet Sauvignon, from the grape whose vines have been exported the world over to produce many award winning international varieties. This wine has a rich deep red colour and very bold taste which is distinguishable even to novices. This French red wine is enjoyed with a wide variety of meals.
