Lebanese Red Wine

Lebanon is the country of some of the oldest wine making Lebanon-Wine-Regions.jpg
efforts in the world, readers of religious scripture will usually note many references to the wine of the country in rather reverential terms. Great civilizations such as those of the Greeks and Rome were said to have adopted a substantial amount of their wine making practices and even religious rituals that had to do with wine from various regions in the country. Although wine making was very much an ancient art in Lebanon it came into great decline centuries ago as the country became part of Muslim caliphate and wine production reduced greatly.

Current wine making in Lebanon today has led to a variety of the wines produced being produced from grapes of French origins, however Lebanon makes excellent wines with a number of its indigenous grapes. Although not a Lebanese red wine, the famous Chateau Musar white is a white wine made from the indigenous Obaideh and Merwah grapes. The Cinsaut grapes used in Lebanese wine are French in origin but some part came to Lebanon by vines imported from Algeria.

Most Lebanese red wines made from French wine making grapes are not famous for the wines themselves but for the wine making estates that make them. This is why when people talk of Lebanese red wine you usually hear of names such as Domaine des Tourelles, Chateau Musar, Chateau Kefraya and Chateau Ksara among others. These wine making estates are responsible for a large part of the fame of Lebanese red wine on the international market.

Chateau Ksara is Lebanon's oldest functioning winery and it celebrated its 150th birthday back in 2007. This winery produces at least six different red wines as well as a number of whites and other alcoholic drinks. Its wines are either blends of wine grapes such as Cabernet, Merlot and others. In order to benefit from Chateau Ksara's wine making heritage, you should always choose the bottle of wine based by its name first and foremost. It also always pays to research public opinions considering wine brands from the Chateau and the particular years of production.

Domaine des Tourelles is Lebanon's second oldest wine making estate, but despite its age it is still making some steps to reemerge on the international wine scene as one of Lebanon's premier names, it makes red wines such as the Syrah du Liban, made exculsively from the Syrah and a number of other wines made from various blends.

The famed Chateau Musar makes the award winning wine of the same name.  This red wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan, Grenache, and Mourvèdre grapes. The Chateau also makes the equally renowned Chateau Musar white from indigenous Lebanese grapes. Wines from the Chateau Musar generally get better with age.
