South African Red Wine

Wine making in South Africa has a history that starts sometime in the middle of the 17th century. The areas around the the city of Cape Town, were and still are the primary areas where the grapes and vineyards for most of South Africa's wine industry are located. Other regions such as Stellenbosch, Paarl and Worcester also produce wines as well. The famous Constantia estate which produced wines in the 17th century popular with kings such as Frederick the Great and the Emperor Napoleon in Europe, still produces some of South Africa's finest wines.

The South African Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely produced of all the country's red wines.  It has a deep red colour and is bottled by a number of different wine estates and concerns. From the famed Constantia estate of the Cape Town region to other lesser known establishments. This South African red wine usually has a hint of cedar or oak in its flavour fruits depending on which particular wine estate or concern made the wine in question.

wine of the South African variety, another South African red wine, the Pinotage often sounds vaguely familiar and rightly so. This uniquely South African variety of wine comes from grapes that were bred as a cross between the famed Pinot Noir and Cinsaut in the earlier part of the 20th century. This wine is usually deep red in colour and has an earthy flavor. It is also usually accompanied with the notes of fruits such as bananas. It can be enjoyed with meals that go well with its parent, the Pinot Noir.

Another popular South African red wine, also popular in other countries around the world that grow a variety of the grapes is the South African Merlot. This particular Merlot often offered made strictly from the grape of the same name or blended with the well liked Carbernet Sauvignon. Whatever the case, this wine does well with game and other meats especially steak. It has a very fruity and bold taste when consumed.

The South African Hermitage is actually made from the Cinsaut grape, although a lot of this grape is produced most of this wine is usually blended with Carbernet Sauvignon varieties in South Africa to provide wine with a much more distinctive taste. Some wine makers however offer this South African red wine on it’s own.
